Start With The Question: What Is Limiting Performance?

Busy weeks create the temptation to squeeze everything in, but that often leads to mediocre outcomes across the board. A smarter approach is to ask which factor is most likely to limit the next important performance.

If the athlete is under-recovered, another lift is rarely the answer. If the athlete feels fresh but unstable in key positions, mobility or targeted strength might help immediately.

Do Not Treat Rest As Failure

Athletes often frame rest days as lost opportunities, especially when motivation is high. In reality, rest can be the session that preserves output for the work that matters most.

The value of a session depends on its timing and purpose, not on how demanding it feels in the moment.

Mobility Should Solve A Constraint

Mobility work becomes useful when it addresses a position the athlete genuinely cannot own, such as overhead range, hip rotation, or front-side mechanics. Random stretching without a target rarely changes much.

Short focused blocks tied to movement quality are easier to repeat and more likely to produce meaningful transfer.

Strength Sessions Need A Reason Too

Strength work during a busy week should either maintain an important quality or address a specific weakness. If it only adds fatigue without a clear return, it is probably mistimed.

Better weekly planning comes from choosing the smallest effective intervention, then reassessing after the next competition or key practice.
